This was an enjoyable, warm hearted story。 My son is almost 7 so I read the book to him and he read the sound effects which he enjoyed doing and he really got into emphasising the sound effects。 He also enjoyed the story, however it wasn’t one of his favourites。I particularly liked the references to History within the book and I was able to go into more detail about certain parts of the book with my son。 It became somewhat a history lesson by my sons interest in exploring more about our history This was an enjoyable, warm hearted story。 My son is almost 7 so I read the book to him and he read the sound effects which he enjoyed doing and he really got into emphasising the sound effects。 He also enjoyed the story, however it wasn’t one of his favourites。I particularly liked the references to History within the book and I was able to go into more detail about certain parts of the book with my son。 It became somewhat a history lesson by my sons interest in exploring more about our history and using the book for reference。 My only issue with books from this author is some of the language he uses which knocks the star off。 Whilst I understand the audience for these books are children, I feel some of the language is vulgar or ‘stupid’ and too over the top。 There are many children’s authors who we love, that create amazing stories for children without doing this。 I found myself editing some of the words as I was reading it so not encouraging my son to adopt ‘stupid’ language。 I know it’s supposed to be silly and fun and it may appeal to his target audience。 I just find it cringe and unnecessary and I would absolutely cringe if I heard my son repeating some of these words。Overall, the story itself was lovely, some light hearted humour, and we both really grew attached to most of the characters。 Gertrude in particular had such a warm personality and I think was my little boys favourite character。 。。。more

I thought the plot was ok, but the book was unnecessarily long to convey said plot。 My daughter seemed to think it was reasonable, but not great。 She only found a handful of parts funny。 I wouldn't recommend。 There are much better kids books I thought the plot was ok, but the book was unnecessarily long to convey said plot。 My daughter seemed to think it was reasonable, but not great。 She only found a handful of parts funny。 I wouldn't recommend。 There are much better kids books 。。。more

I really like Walliams' children books, as these stories are always filled with adventures, courage, love, bravery, adaptation to changing and challenging life situations, cleverness and humour。 This time, a bit of history in the World World II era was included, as well as lovely animals with their own characters。 A great read even for adults。 I really like Walliams' children books, as these stories are always filled with adventures, courage, love, bravery, adaptation to changing and challenging life situations, cleverness and humour。 This time, a bit of history in the World World II era was included, as well as lovely animals with their own characters。 A great read even for adults。 。。。more

Another one I have read to my son and we both loved。 Characters are a hoot! This book had it all for us; the good, the bad and the downright ugly, romance, excitement, fun and much more all mixed up with some great history on the war and the sad reality of the casualties it took with it too。Sid, Eric and even Bessie were a delight to follow through this。 And even Gertrude was just so loveable。 Read it yourself and enjoy。

This book has a reasonable plot that, although quite involved, is a simple one string narrative which is easy enough to follow for middle grade readers。 Following the story of Eric and his improbable, but fun, rescue of a gorilla, it touches on some history and some sad events。 However there is no depth to the book。Most frustrating are the sections where the background to the page is grey or patterned as this makes the text very hard to read。 The story is also littered with sound effects which a This book has a reasonable plot that, although quite involved, is a simple one string narrative which is easy enough to follow for middle grade readers。 Following the story of Eric and his improbable, but fun, rescue of a gorilla, it touches on some history and some sad events。 However there is no depth to the book。Most frustrating are the sections where the background to the page is grey or patterned as this makes the text very hard to read。 The story is also littered with sound effects which add nothing to the narrative。 If someone is munching something, no one needs to be told ‘the seal munched。。。。MUNCH!’。 If these had been taken out the story would have been about 1/3 shorter, they are that excessively used。 Fortunately only fleeting mention of the tedious Walliamsictionary in this book though。The children enjoyed the plot, and there were some funny moments, but it’s not a book that will be worth re-visiting。 。。。more

I normally go to the library and pick up a few adult books but since it's closed, I've had to make use of the books at home。 I found this book really entertaining , although sad at some parts。 I normally go to the library and pick up a few adult books but since it's closed, I've had to make use of the books at home。 I found this book really entertaining , although sad at some parts。 。。。more
